“They…come in with weapons, they seized a half-million dollars worth of property, they shut our factory down, and they have not charged us with anything,” says Gibson Guitars CEO Henry Juszkiewicz, referring to the August 2011 raid on his Nashville and Memphis factories by agents from the Departments of Homeland Security and Fish & Wildlife.
The feds raided Gibson for using an inappropriate tariff code on wood from India, which is a violation of the anti-trafficking statute known as The Lacey Act. At issue is not whether the wood in question was endangered, but whether the wood was the correct level of thickness and finish before being exported from India. “India is wanting to ensure that raw wood is not exported without some labor content from India,” says Juskiewicz.
Andrea Johnson of the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) counters that “it’s not up to Gibson to decide which laws…they want to respect.” She points out that Gibson had previously been raided under The Lacey Act for imports from Madagascar.
This much is clear: The government has yet to file any charges or allow Gibson a day in court to makes its case, much less retrieve its materials. “This is not about responsible forestry and sustainable wood or illegal logging, this is about a bureaucratic law,” argues Juszkiewicz, who testified last year before a congressional hearing convened by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). It is, he says, “a blank check for abuse.”

The friends write their desires on pieces of paper, and Lada promises them that they will come true — for sure! Except that Fate has already made its own arrangements…

Prepare a whole pork loin the right way, and you’ll have a tender, delectable roast your dinner guests will be sure to enjoy.
Step 1: Select top-quality beef
Select a top-quality pork loin roast. If you like, ask the butcher to trim excess fat, leaving a layer to protect and baste the roast as it cooks.
Step 2: Prepare the roast
Discard any strings, set the pork loin fat-side up on a work surface, and pat it dry with a paper towel.
Step 3: Rub the roast
Rub some butter on the cut ends. Cut 1/2-inch deep slits on the top and sides of the roast, and cover it with seasoning rub.
Step 4: Place the roast in a pan
Place the roast in a roasting pan, fat side facing up.
Step 5: Transfer the roast to an oven
Place the roast in an oven that has been preheated to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. After 10 minutes, reduce the temperature to 325 degrees for the remainder of the cooking time. Baste it occasionally with the pan juices.
Step 6: Insert a meat thermometer
Insert a meat thermometer in the roast after about an hour, and check the roast every 5 minutes after that. When the thermometer reaches 145 degrees, remove the roast from the oven and cover it with foil.
Tip
Let the meat rest for 20 to 30 minutes.
Step 7: Carve the roast
Carve the roast with a long, sharp knife, and serve with your favorite sauce.

Making a sling is a simple procedure, and it is very handy to immobilize an injured shoulder, arm, or collarbone.
Step 1: Cut cloth into square
Cut a large piece of cloth into a square that is at least 40″ on each side.
Tip
If necessary, dress any wounds or make a splint before putting the arm in a sling.
Step 2: Fold in half
Fold the cloth diagonally in half, forming a triangle.
Step 3: Place sling
Drape the triangle so its base runs up and down the chest opposite the injured side, with the top corner dangling over and behind the shoulder on the uninjured side, and the bottom corner hanging below the waist. The corner opposite the base should wrap part way around the waist, lying between the torso and the injured arm’s elbow.
Step 4: Support arm
Gently support the injured arm at the elbow across the torso.
Step 5: Drape corner
Lift the bottom corner up so the sling now cradles the injured arm. The hand should extend just past the base of the triangle and the elbow should be supported by the corner that’s opposite the base. Drape that same corner you just lifted over and behind the shoulder above the injured arm.
Step 6: Tie two corners together
Tie the two corners that are behind either shoulder to each other so they loop behind the neck, adjusting the knot so the elbow is bent at a right angle, not drooping low or pulled too high.
Tip
If you don’t have a piece of cloth available, use a long-sleeved shirt or sweater. Simply tie the sleeves together behind the neck and anchor the arm with the body of the shirt.
Step 7: Secure sling w/ cloth
To further immobilize the arm, wrap a long, thin piece of cloth around the body to keep the arm securely against the body.
